3 Ways to get in shape in Sheffield (without visiting a gym!)
It seems there are dozens of gyms in Sheffield, almost one on every street corner. You’d easily be led to believe that heading to the gym is the only way to burn off the student night excess food and booze. Hold on, there is another way!
There are loads of things to do in Sheffield to get in shape without pounding the treadmill, or hammering the dumbbells. Here we take a look at 3 activities you may not have yet come across in Sheffield that can help you to get that summer body, and have fun too!
The Climbing Works
The Climbing Works is kind of a big deal in Sheffield. It opened in 2006 and was the World's largest bouldering centre for many years (it still is one of the largest in the World). The Climbing Works, which is based on Little London Road, is a world renowned bouldering centre. If you’re new to climbing, or any sort of fitness, ‘world renowned’ might not mean a lot to you, but it is an excellent way to build core strength, power and suppleness. An annual membership for students works out at £26.50 which is about the going rate for a standard gym membership, excluding the Sheffield Hallam or Sheffield University gym.
If you've never climbed before you'll need to do a Climbing Induction before you can register at the Climbing Works. Why not see if your housemates might be up for it too and come along to see if it’s for you? You might surprise yourself and find out that playing beer pong isn’t your only talent!
We’re not sure if this activity won’t turn into a drunken student night, but we need to tell you about Sheffield Ice. You don’t have to be professional to have a go though at ice skating, or ice hockey. All you need to do is jump on the tram and head for Meadowhall, just jump off a few stops before at the Sheffield Arena stop. Check out the timetable below.
Sheffield Ice have a session called ‘cheap skate’, which works out at £1.25 a go, with a Sheffield Life Card, which is almost free at £3 a year! Don’t worry about falling over, you probably won’t be the only one!
Sheffield Boxing Club
Boxing might not be everyone’s cup of tea (or vodka mixer) but it is one of the best ways to get fit. In a few weeks you will see a big difference in general fitness levels and body shape.
Sheffield is the home of boxing in England and has produced many world champions from Prince Naseem Hamed, Johnny Nelson and Kell Brook. Superstar heavyweight champion boxer Anthony Joshua also uses Sheffield as his base when he is training for his fights. If it’s good enough for AJ then it’s good enough for us!
There are several boxing clubs dotted all over the city, which are linked to below. There are ‘boxercise’ classes for all and you don’t have to step anywhere near a boxing ring, unless you want to!
